Creator Zone

On Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm we will be turning the 12 feet of Saturday’s “Bring & Buy” tables into a Creator Zone.

The plan is that this space in the trade hall will be open to aspiring creators and creatives to sell their wares and to network with each other.

We want it to be a market type of area where artists, novelists, games designers and musicians can share their work and meet-up with like-minded creators.

So, how do you take part? Well, buy a ticket for the con and we’ll see you at the tables on the Sunday. We’ll post a staff member in the area to help facilitate the zone too.

We hope that societies will bring along their art, writing and music zines and it would be great to see aspiring artists and self-published novelists and game designers selling their books.

There is no fee to be on the Creator Zone tables, all we ask is that be respectful and mutually supportive of other people using the area.

IRN GM

Conpulsion’s IRN GM competition is back this year.

The rules are simple:

Sign up at the RPG sign up desk  on Saturday, and collect your three random GURPS supplements.

Write an RPG Scenario based on the three books given to you.

Hand in the sign up sheet and synopsis (as well as the supplements) on Sunday morning.

Run your game on the Sunday afternoon and be judged.

Prove that you can pull and RPG out of thin air with the best of them and win a prize.

Enthroning the SKoG – competition

We hope to be offering these items for sale shortly before the first slot starts.  Exact timings will be published as soon as they are confirmed.

All items must be listed individually on an official Conpulsion B&B form which will be made available shortly.  If you wish to pre-number your goods, please contact us to be issued with your unique reference.

THE STALL RUNS ON SATURDAY ONLY.  Roleplaying and other gaming products will be given priority if stall space is limited.

A 10% commission will be taken from the stall to be donated to this year’s charity.

Guest: Newt Newport and D101 Games

In 2008 while faffing about creating an Imaginary Games company to produce a game based on Monkey: The Journey to the West, a 20 page RPG.net thread over the then woeful state of Gloranthan publications, inspired me to put my money where my heart was and leap head first into the world of roleplaying games fanzines.  Three months later the first issue of Hearts in Glorantha was released to much appreciation, and building on this came OpenQuest, a tribute game to old RuneQuest, its supplement the Savage North and then Monkey itself.

I’m the self-styled Benevolent Dicator of D101 Games, regularly pulling rabbits out of hats and producing new games and supplements in both the Storytelling and Traditional mode. Written both by myself and a gang of other authors. Its a tread mill of fun that beats the crap out losing myself in the World of Warcrack and that’s seen 19 books in four years.  I once had an entire convention, independently tell me that you couldn’t make any money out of RPGs. It made me smile wryly, since D101 does make money SO EVERYONE INVOLVED GETS PAID and much greater spiritual goals are achived on a regular basis.

I recently released Crypts and Things, a none too subtle mix of Swords and Sorcery D&D with the DM’s advice written while channelling Clark Ashton-Smith and I’m currently writing Project Darklight a Cyberpunk game, which mixes up with an explosive cocktail of Ufology and scathing commentary on the current state of information technology.

Mr Newport can be found around the convention and running The Magical Painter and Operation Wolverine games.

More Mobile Frame Zero pictures & Kickstarter news

Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack is designed to be playable with two to five players, each fielding a company of mobile frames of different strengths. The game keeps tension high by making sure that no player ever quite has enough frames, equipment, or time to be a sure thing. In fact, the player in the strongest points position to win is the player with the weakest company; if you expect to fight from a difficult position, be ready to run away and come back in another round!

Play starts with the doomsday clock set to 11. Every turn, it ticks down by one automatically. At 0 the game ends. But adding to that is the possibility that each player can mark it down faster. If you’re winning, you’ll mark it down every round. If you think you’ll be winning this round, you’ll mark it down. Players never really know how soon the game will end until the very end.

Rules are tightly tied to the frames themselves. Every frame has its own two white dice, then has added to it up to four subsystems. Those systems help the frame move, attack at one of three ranges, defend themselves, and observe & communicate. When a frame takes damage, it takes damage by losing those systems.

Play takes between 2.5 and 4 hours, depending on the age and number of players. Eager 10-year-olds seem to grasp the game well, but it offers a constantly flowing sea of tactical options to more experienced players.

Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack are seeking funding for their Kickstarter. Simply click the link to find out more and support them.
